Korg SQ-10: Off The Grid

UNQUANTISED STEP-SEQUENCING & MIDI-TO-CV TRANSLATION

The Korg SQ-10 makes no sound. At every step it sends three control voltages, and what a synthesiser does with them is up to you. Set pitch by ear and it lands between the notes a MIDI grid allows. Patch a channel into the clock and the beat pushes and pulls. Drive the filter step by step, or run a DAW stem through the MS-10 while the sequencer moves it. This is the working engineer’s manual for all of it: twelve repeatable procedures, each laid out as an open spread, with the patch on the left, the listening check on the right and a QR code to hear it.

I N S I D E

  • ■ Twelve protocols in four groups: pitch, time, timbre and hybrid stem work
  • ■ Microtonal scales, glides, warped time, polymeter and 24-step phrases
  • ■ Bench procedures to measure your own unit’s voltages, clock and latency
  • ■ Three worked sessions, a patch matrix, tuning tables and session logs

Korg MS-10 External Processing

AN ENGINEER'S MANUAL FOR ANALOGUE RE-AMPING

Digital in. Analogue character out. Route clean digital stems through the Korg MS-10's analogue signal path (VCA, Korg-35 filter, envelope generator, modulation generator and patchbay) and get them back saturated, moving, gated or snapped. A working engineer's manual: repeatable procedures, not one-off recipes.

I N S I D E

  • ■ Four step-by-step treatment protocols: saturation, filter dynamics, VCA gating, transient reshaping
  • ■ Routing schematics with waveform and spectrogram references for every treatment
  • ■ Stem preparation specifications, gain staging and the full hybrid studio signal path

The Digital Cure

Modern software synthesisers are incredibly precise, but they lack the unpredictable behaviour and colouration of physical electricity.

We offer an exclusive analogue bridge for producers who want the aggressive, squelching filters and natural swing of vintage 1970s Korg hardware, without the maintenance or the massive price tag.

Your MIDI and audio stems are physically routed through our studio, sculpted by hand, and captured back into pristine 24-bit digital audio.

The Operators

Behind the Voltage & Wave Project

Jose Velazquez

ARCHITECT & SIGNAL ENGINEER

José Velázquez is a London-based software architect, multimedia producer, and archivist. Over the last 20 years, he has led projects for the BBC, IBM, and Google, working across both software engineering and creative media. With a background in BBC broadcast operations and an MA in Documentary Research, José manages the engineering and signal flow at Voltage & Wave, handling the studio's analogue re-amping and hardware sequencing. His interest in electronica also extends to custom code, developing experimental, open-source Web Audio tools—including browser-based synthesisers and sequencers inspired by vintage hardware.

Simon Velazquez

RESIDENT ARTIST & COMPOSER

An accomplished electronic artist and instrumentalist from Spain, Simon brings deep musicality and emotion to the studio's raw voltage. Known for his captivating live performances, his original compositions blend vintage analogue synthesisers with organic pianos, cinematic strings, and progressive arrangements. Within Voltage & Wave, Simon is the musical ear guiding the machinery. He ensures that every translated sequence, filter sweep, and unquantised bassline isn't just a technical process, but a deeply expressive, human performance.

Analogue Filter Processing & Re-amping

YOUR DIGITAL AUDIO, DRIVEN THROUGH PHYSICAL CIRCUITS.

Send us your flat basslines, drums, or soft-synth stems. We will route them through the legendary, aggressive resonant low-pass filters of our vintage Korg MS-10 or Behringer K-2. Whether you want subtle harmonic warmth or brutal, overdriven EBM distortion, we tweak the VCAs and filters in real-time to breathe life into your tracks.

Authentic Vintage Sequencing

BREAKING THE DIGITAL GRID WITH UNQUANTISED SWING.

Digital metronomes can feel lifeless. Send us your MIDI melodies, and we will manually translate them onto our 1978 Korg SQ-10 analogue sequencer by ear. Because the SQ-10 uses continuous voltage rather than quantised steps, your basslines will gain a natural, drifting, human groove that software simply cannot synthesise.

ON REPAIR BENCH

VC-10 Vocoder Processing

DIAGNOSTICS IN PROGRESS // CARRIER SIGNAL LOST.

The Korg VC-10 is currently dismantled on the repair bench awaiting fresh New Old Stock (NOS) components. Robotic, analogue vocal textures will return to the studio offering once circuitry calibration is complete.

Custom Hardware Sound Design

BESPOKE STEMS, BUILT FROM THE GROUND UP.

Need a massive, chorused Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) bassline or a generative, tumbling arpeggio? We provide custom sound design using our hardware arsenal. Tell us the tempo and the key, and we will deliver raw, mix-ready analogue stems straight to your inbox.

How It Works

1

Data Submission

Send us your dry audio stems, MIDI sequences, or sound design briefs, along with a reference track for vibe.

2

Signal Routing

We physically patch the studio for your chosen path: driving audio into vintage filters, designing custom voices, or translating MIDI to CV.

3

Tactile Processing

No automation. Your tracks are processed in real-time as we manually ride the circuitry—tweaking filters, envelopes, and sequences.

4

Digital Capture

Receive phase-aligned, mix-ready 24-bit/48kHz digital WAV files, perfectly preserving the unpredictable analogue character.

Stem Specifications

Recommended Parameters for Hardware Processing

CHANNEL FORMAT

  • ■ Strictly mono (single-channel WAV or AIFF).
  • ■ For stereo sources: Export separate left and right mono stems for independent processing. Maintain identical interface buffer/latency settings during capture to ensure sample-accurate alignment when hard-panning the returns.

STEM DURATION

  • ■ Loops: Because we physically ride the hardware circuitry in real-time, please send 1-to-2 minute evolving loops (16 to 64 bars) rather than full 8-minute track renders.
  • ■ Full Takes: For continuous, non-looping performances (like solos or vocoding), please limit stems to 5 minutes maximum to ensure optimal tactical performance.

GAIN STAGING

  • ■ Peak levels between -6dBFS and -3dBFS. This ensures a robust output without digital clipping prior to conversion.
  • ■ Routing Note: The patch bay `EXT SIGNAL IN` has a 3Vp-p limit and may clip prematurely. We route via the front-panel input for greater headroom, utilising the `EXTERNAL SIGNAL LEVEL` knob to set the precise analogue drive.

PROCESSING & EFFECTS

  • ■ Completely dry: Disable all reverbs, delays, and digital modulation before export.
  • ■ Uncompressed: Bypass all digital compression or limiting. The hardware voltage-controlled amplifier and filter rely on natural volume fluctuations to overdrive interactively.

FREQUENCY CONTENT

  • ■ Full spectrum and raw.
  • ■ Do not apply pre-equalisation. The resonant low-pass filter requires dense, high-frequency harmonic content to process effectively.

FILE FORMAT

  • ■ 24-bit WAV or AIFF.
  • ■ Sample rate matched to the project session (e.g., 48kHz).
  • ■ Strictly lossless to prevent digital compression artefacts from being exaggerated by the hardware's colouration.

Experimental Web Audio & Sequencing

Generative Sound & Digital Synthesis

ENGINEERED BY JOSE VELAZQUEZ

While our final processing path is strictly analogue, our research into electronic composition extends into custom code. Velazquez develops experimental Web Audio sequencers, radial polyrhythm engines, and browser-based synthesisers. These open-source tools act as our digital R&D playground—exploring generative sound design, Euclidean algorithms, and classic Korg-style sequencing environments natively in the browser.
